A town gained its title from either a Wyre estuary, which lies less than 2 kilometers to the north-east at Skippool. A title Poulton was created by combining a Old English words Pol, for even pool or creek, & Tun, meaning the farmstead or even enclosure. So a title signifies "settlement by the pool". Within 1842 the suffix 'le-Fylde' was added to distinguish a village from Poulton-le-Sands, a community since renamed to Morecambe.

History
In a period of the Roman era, the metropolitan area around this location was believed to become marshy ground, and was sparsely settled.
